PETERBOROUGH & THE KAWARTHAS ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® INC. TO FUND SUBSIDIZED MEALS PROGRAM

Peterborough and the Kawarthas Association of REALTORS® Inc. will provide funding to meet Community Care Peterborough’s need to ensure the subsidized meals program continues.

Responding to an urgent call for assistance, Peterborough and the Kawarthas Association of REALTORS® Inc. will provide Community Care Peterborough with a $5,000.00 donation to ensure that the subsidized meals program continues for seniors and adults with physical challenges on a modest income living in the County of Peterborough.

Since August 2007, Community Care Peterborough and Peterborough County City Health Unit have worked together to offer subsidized meals to county residents. Community Care has provided the frozen meals and the Health Unit has subsidized the meals for eligible clients. Over 150 different individuals have received 8,635 subsidized meals to date. Unfortunately, this subsidy through the “Food Security Community Partnership Project” is not available for 2009. As a result, the clients currently receiving meals will no longer be able to access this program and due to their modest income will not be able to afford the usual cost per meal. This year, Community Care is faced with the challenge of raising over $250,000.00. However, even raising this amount to sustain our programs and services does not include the continuation of the Frozen Meal Subsidy.

With the support of Peterborough and the Kawarthas Association of REALTORS® Inc., clients can continue to receive subsidized meals. These nutritious frozen meals are prepared with more protein and vitamins with controlled levels of sodium and less fat than other commonly available prepared frozen meals. Special dietary needs can be accommodated such as renal, gluten free, pureed and minced. Good nutrition is a critical component in promoting physical and mental well being and enabling seniors to live at home, where they prefer to be.

Community Care Peterborough is a non-profit, charitable organization that offers a range of practical support services such as Meals on Wheels, Transportation, Home Making etc, designed to help the frail elderly and people with physical challenges accomplish the tasks of everyday living in Peterborough County and City. Through a network of eight service delivery sites and a team of 25 staff, 4,073 clients received service primarily from a team of over 883 dedicated volunteers who provided 72,726 hours of service to the organization in 2008/2009.
